February 12, 2025 – The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has launched its new Open Data Portal (ODP), streamlining access to its vast repository of intellectual property data. This initiative aims to modernize the agency’s systems, enhance user experience, and consolidate multiple services into a single, user-friendly platform.
A New Era of Open Data
The Open Data Portal is designed to serve a wide range of users, including researchers, entrepreneurs, legal professionals, and students. By offering an intuitive interface, it allows users to quickly access, customize, and extract essential USPTO data. The portal provides an improved experience for those seeking patent and trademark information, making intellectual property research more efficient and accessible.
What’s Changing?
The launch of the Open Data Portal marks the beginning of a transition away from older systems. It will replace the Patent Examination Data System (PEDS) and the Bulk Data Storage System (BDSS):
PEDS: Will remain available for at least 30 days post-launch before retirement.
BDSS: Will be accessible for at least 60 days before being phased out.
The USPTO will provide additional updates on the exact retirement dates of these systems to ensure a smooth transition for users.
Support and Feedback Opportunities
To assist users in navigating the new platform, USPTO offers support resources, including guidance on utilizing Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). Additionally, the agency is inviting stakeholders to participate in upcoming feedback sessions to refine the portal based on user needs.
